Profile and Strategy

Deutsche Bahn AG

Deutsche Bahn AG was founded in 1994. Today, it is one of the world's leading passenger and logistics companies and operates in 150 countries. The company's rail activities in Germany are its core business.

Every day, about 237,000 employees, approx. 182,500 of whom are located in Germany, are committed to providing mobility and logistics services for customers, as well as controlling and operating the related transport networks in the rail, land, ocean, and air freight transport sectors.

The main focal points of DB strategy, in addition to increasing its international activities, are linking together all modes of transport, and building comprehensive intermodal travel and logistics chains. This is how the company is meeting the changing challenges posed by the markets, which are increasingly demanding efficient and environmentally friendly services from a single source. Already today, Deutsche Bahn AG is providing answers to the determining trends of globalisation, climate change and scarcity of resources, as well as deregulation.

Under the "DB Bahn" brand, the Deutsche Bahn Group offers rail transport, bus services as well as other intermodal mobility products, which meanwhile play an increasingly important role. The objective is to offer intelligent combinations of rail services, but also smooth and easy transfers to other transport modes. The CityTicket function for BahnCard holders, for example, ensures that long-distance rail services tie in perfectly with regional and urban transport services.

In view of present and future customer requirements, it is essential to offer rail freight transport as part of holistic logistics solutions. That key concept is already reflected in the DB Group's business strategy. The Transportation and Logistics Division has a uniform presentation on the international markets under the "DB Schenker" brand, positioning the Group as an efficient partner for transport and logistics customers worldwide.

The business units of the Infrastructure Division operate in the market under the "DB Netze" brand. DB Netze offers a comprehensive range of rail, energy and service networks, creating the necessary conditions for flourishing rail business from a single source.

With effect from 2 June 2008, it was resolved to hive off the passenger transport and logistics sectors to form the new company DB Mobility Logistics AG (DB ML AG), of which a maximum share of 24.9% is to be privatised. The new DB AG management concept ensures maximum continuity and simultaneously reflects the demands of the capital market, whilst providing the required security for the internal labour market in compliance with the existing employment alliance.
